Main Room Rock opens with Anti-Civ Record’s folk punk barnstormers Sorry OK, followed with the punch drunk power of STNNNG. Sand Ox, a new prog-metal group including gastro t-shirt wearer Duff Goldman from Ace of Cakes will be stopping by to blow your mind, and then Zebulon Pike will pressure wash whatever grey matter remains in your skull.

The 7th St. Entry will be abuzz with the macabre musical styling of El Le Faunt, the pogo punk good times with the boys from Voytek and the brutal riffage provided by the always shirtless Nightosaur.
Haute Dish and Grand Café will be on hand in the main room all night satisfying your need for the sweet and the savory, while Modern Café will be holding it down in 7th St. Entry with food to match the musical intensity.

Advance tickets are $15 and include 3 food tickets upon entry. Day of show is also $15, but alas you’ll have to buy your own food tickets at $3 each. Or skip all the rigamarole and attend our VIP Sausagefest with Mike Phillips from Green Ox Meats in the VIP room an hour before main doors open. After weeks of old man winter dumping loads of cold,it’s about time for Gastro Non Grata to heat things up with our third nose-thumbing at Valentines Day. We’ve got the whole crew from Chowgirls Killer Catering coming by in western wear to serve up samples of Indian Curry with Cinnamon-Scented Basmati Rice and Marvel's Seven Spice Raita. Followed by Truman's Asian Pork Short Ribs with Kim Chee Slaw.

For your drinking pleasure, we’re happy to welcome our neighbors from the Eastern Seaboard, Southern Tier who have been brewing innovative, vigorously hopped ales and robust stouts since 2003 and are going to be pouring from their regular lineup and a seasonal as well..

To step in and stick it to your sweet tooth, Christian Aldrich, pastry chef extraordinaire from Haute Dish will be concocting the most delicious Southern Tier based cheesecake-type substance you will probably ever eat.

Sounds pretty good doesn’t it? Now let me blow your mind with music. We’re stoked to have the crazy bearded men of 4onthefloor headlining the show, but don’t count out Running Scared, they were built to rock you in places you didn’t know existed. We’ll be opening the evening with Whiskey Jeff and the Beer Back Band singing tunes that’ll make you want to drink some beer, wipe a tear away and then drink some more beer.

Luckily, Northern Brewer will be on hand to start the show with samples of something interesting and will be filling the bar with the sweet smell of boiling wort throughout the night.

As always, expect big plastic bags full of Clancey’s Meat and Fish provided frozen dead animals that you could call your very own just by showing up for our Dead Meat Door Prize.

Does it seem like Craig's a little lonely lately? Crying in his beer more than usual? Listless? Distracted? Do you catch him staring toward the heavens, softly singing "Somewhere Out There" under his breath while he tips back a tallboy? Is he just playing the same Crow record over and over on his DJ Truckstache nights at the King & I?

It's my fault. In September I split town. It's a temporary move, but Gastro Non Grata emotions run deep. I see that Craig has found a temporary, less handsome replacement for me in Jim Grell of the Modern Café. Anything to get through the dark, cold nights, I guess.

The news is that in September, my wife and I moved to Paris. She got a teaching gig for the academic year. We rented our house, dropped the dog with my folks and moved into an 18 square meter apartment in the 11th arrondissement. Bam. Paris.

A food and alcohol lover's dream. As we approach the halfway point of our French adventure, I think some reports are long overdue. I have a shitty camera and a working knowledge of written English so, between now and May 31, I'll be checking in with Gastro Non Grata news from Paris.

Let's start with something important.

The Number One Thing I Can Eat That You Can't:

Soft-ripened raw milk cheese.

"Au Lait Cru" are the magic words. This Mont d'Or was incredible. We would eat it in spoonfuls after letting it sit out to warm up for a few hours. The top grows a white mold peach fuzz so soft you want to gently rub your nose on it. The perimeter is wrapped in pine bark, adding a northwoods forest floor flavor. Weighing in at about a half kilo, at €28-something per kilo, the stuff ain't cheap, but it was totally worth it. I recently bought a generic Mont d'Or from the supermarket for €5 and it wasn't near as good as the artisan crafted stuff. Still, it's nice to live somewhere where there is store-brand raw milk AOC cheese. Below is a Saint-Marcellin. With this one you get a free ceramic dish, useful for coins or as a candle-holder.

The only raw milk cheese aged under 60 days I can think of in Minnesota comes from Lovetree Farmstead who famously sell it as "fishbait" at the St Paul Farmer's Market. With the recent legal activity surrounding the sale of raw milk in MN, I'm not anticipating a change in cheese legislation any time soon. It's unfortunate. Although I am not very well versed in food law, safety standards and whatnot, I've gotta believe there's a way to replicate the French habit of not dying after eating cheese.

Gastro Non Grata has been busy sowing the seeds of knowledge bombs of the best local chefs, purveyors of the finest libation and lots of dirty rock and roll into your skulls for over four years. This fall we reaped such bumper crop of good times we have to make it a two day soiree with all proceeds to benefit our friends at the beautiful Ritz Theater in NE MPLS. That’s right, two days of the finest this city has to offer in chef driven food, locally owned alcoholic beverages and uber-talented musicians.

The November 12 show features chef Philip Becht (Modern Café) and Erik Anderson (Seachange) pairing foods with Crispin Cider while DJ Pat Dwyer (Grumpy’s NE) spins the hits and makes your fingers snap. Bands in order of appearance Magic Castles, Unknown Prophets, Tyler Burkum, and Me and My Arrow.

November 13 brings the flavor with Phil Becht again, flanked by Steven Brown (chef/owner of soon to be Tilia) on vittle patrol with our friends from Fulton Beer and Grape Beginnings. Cakeeater Bakery will also have something for your sweet tooth on hand. In between sets DJ Solid Gold plays the music that keeps hope alive. Music by Black Audience, Phantom Tails, Rude Girl, Marijuana Death Squads and Pink Mink.

We’re also proud to announce we’re bringing the meat raffle back for both nights with our friends from Clancey’s Meat and Fish and a bevy of local NE establishments throwing their wares into the prize vaults, so bring extra cash for raffle tickets.

It’s been about four years since we started GNG and it’s probably time we started thanking all the people who help us try to break even . So this one’s for all our frieeends at Hohenstein’s Distributing and the Triple Rock Social Club. Without them, we’d have a pretty damn boring show.

As for libations, we’re giving craft brewers a break and moving into the world of Door Country Dutch Courage - Death’s Door Spirits is going to be on hand bringing mini-signature cocktails, moonshine stories and maybe a portrait of a rusty tractor in a field.

Our food guests won’t have to go far, the always inventive kitchen staff of the Triple Rock are hard at work in the lab creating vegan-friendly and vegan-unfriendly dishes that will definitely twist brains and make you smile non grata style.

For our musical guests, we’ve kept it in house – The Prairie Sons and Blood, Sweat and Beers both feature members of the Triple Rock Staff and American Penetration and Fiero feature employee’s of Hohenstein’s Dist.

Gastro Non Grata and Modern Café have put aside their petty differences on reality TV programming to bring you GastroWhirl 2 : Muralize It –an entire day of local bands, cold beer, fine wine and a PBR art mural.

Modern Café will be open inside inside until 2pm, but the interesting stuff will be cooking on the parking lot. Jim and Phil are going to be building a BBQ pit out of cinder blocks then overload it with braising pans full of shouldered pork that will be torn into carnitas tacos with radish relish and a few select sides to help set the base for the day of debauchery.

We’re glad the guys at Fulton Beer will be on hand pouring Sweet Child of Vine IPA. Local beer made by local guys drank by local ladies and fellas, a thing of beauty. Also, Chris Brink of Bourget Imports will be on hand to dole out some summer whites and thirst quenching rose for those of you that stick your pinkies in the air.

Our friends at Pabst Blue Ribbon will be on hand all day pounding tall boys and creating an art mural on the empty wall of the parking lot, giving us some some whirl cred and leaving a lasting impression of what should prove to be an amazing show.

It’s been about four years since we started GNG and it’s probably time we started thanking all the people who help us try to break even. So this one’s for all our frieeends at Hohenstein’s Distributing and the Triple Rock Social Club. Without them, we’d have a pretty damn boring show.

As for libations, we’re giving craft brewers a break and moving into the world of Door Country Dutch Courage - Death’s Door Spirits is going to be on hand bringing mini-signature cocktails, moonshine stories and maybe a portrait of a rusty tractor in a field.

Our food guests won’t have to go far, the always inventive kitchen staff of the Triple Rock are hard at work in the lab creating vegan-friendly and vegan-unfriendly dishes that will definitely twist brains and make you smile non grata style.

For our musical guests, we’ve kept it in house – The Prairie Sons and Blood, Sweat and Beers both feature members of the Triple Rock Staff and American Penetration and Fiero feature employee’s of Hohenstein’s Dist.

As always, Northern Brewer will be on hand making and pouring gastrobrew
Dead Meat Door Prizes from Clancey’s Meat and Fish in Linden Hill’s will continue to be engaging, thought-provoking and useful.

This is a celebration of the most versatile food to ever be passed from an animal and we have absolutely no idea what’s going to happen. Will there be flan? I can’t tell you because I don’t know. Eggnog mayonnaise? Pork Belly soufflé? I like the way you think, but we’re going to leave this one to the professionals.

Erik Anderson (Seachange), Philip Becht (Modern Café), Steven Brown, Alexander Dixon, Brian Crouch (D’amico) and Landon Schoenefeld (Haute Dish) will be taking turns slingin’ ouf all night long for much needed charitable donations. The night before the show each chef will receive 100 eggs courtesy of our friends at Bar 5 and and five pounds of butter and other goodies from Land O' Lakes. They will then turn an ear to their roguish inner voices and follow blindly.

Aping the egg, the night’s music comes in two parts, country will be the albumen to rock and roll’s vitellus. The Annandale Cardinals, Captain Clawthroat and Rope Trick will provide some good old, down home, sunny side up country music. While The Yoleus, Truckstops Across America and Total Fucking Blood will devil up some power chords and hard-boil some brains into an obnoxious rock and roll salad.

Screen Printers Tom and Burke from Overproof will be on hand with a portable screen printing machine ready to beautify any shirt you can bring them, 150 T Shirts will be provided on-site as well for donation.

All proceeds of the show will be used to support children in Mozambique, helping with their education and general well-being. If you can't make the show, we'd sure appreciate it if you'd go to this facebook page/website and show some support and donate a couple bucks to get us closer to our $5000 goal. It's for a good cause, so keep the loose change at home and bring the money that folds.

This time we're making a big deal out of small plates. We welcome Doug Flicker of Piccolo on 43rd and Bryant. With a focus on flavor and locality Doug has been a stalwart proponent of good food in this city for many years. Hailing from such legendary restaurants as Auriga, Porter & Frye and D'amico Kitchen, we count ourselves lucky to bring some flavor samples to the stage. He will be creating a smoked sturgeon dish and the most amazing pork meatball known to man.

Our brewery guest will be the Eric Wallace and Mike Walters of Left Hand Brewing of Colorado. They are a great craft brewery that has stuck to their guns and continued to produce balanced, drinkable beers and a host of interesting seasonal brews.

On the music front, we couldn't be more excited. We'll kick off the evening with the Rockabilly roustabouts BITCH AND BROWN as they bring their atmospheric blend of spaghetti westerns, flathead 8's and heartache. Then prepare to be lulled into a sonic mind trip by the waxing, waning, driving BELLA KOSHKA. Thirdly, our first hip hop act, Nordeast's own Mike and Big Jess, your UNKNOWN PROPHETS will make the hamster wheel in your head spin while you tentatively think about shaking your stoic midwestern booty. To finish things off with a bang, we've brought in NOISE NOISE NOISE, some snotty but well meaning fellas driving all the way from Montana in the name of punk rock.

As an added bonus, all around sweetheart and cupcake yakuza overlord Sheela Namakkal of soon-to-open Cake Eater Bakery will be hanging around dispersing some of the best goddamn cupcakes you'll ever taste at intermittent points throughout the night.

As always Northern Brewer will be on hand. Pouring the hoppy amber ale from our last show and boiling a whole new batch of beer goodness in the back.

Dammit! It's cold outside again. Why not come warm your cockels with Gastro Non Grata.
For our dozenth show we're proud to have our first returning guest chef Landon Schoenfeld who has worked just about everywhere in town. He's opening his own restaurant in the coming months Haute Dish where he's going to gourmetize the comfort dishes we all know and love such as tater tot hot dish and more. He's going to be doing three sample courses, two from his forthcoming restaurant and one from his part time job slinging hash at The Wienery.

Our beer guest will be 21st Amendment Brewery, located in San Francisco, but recently contract brewing their cans of Hell or High Watermelon Wheat and Brew Free or Die IPA amongst some brand new beers we'll be debuting to the Metro area at Gastro Non Grata. These guys moved their release date for the city just to be a part of our little show, awwwww.

We're proud to give you one of our most eclectic music lineups yet. Starting with the sweet country sounds of the Annandale Cardinals, followed by the dueling pianos of the Legendary Cornbread Harris and West Bank Favorite Caddilac Kolstad. Then we kick out the jams with the big sound, pint sized School of Rock. Arctic Universe hits the stage with his mesmerizing gothic crooning and then Falcon Crest will bring the loud noises to finish off the evening.

Northern Brewer will start the show off by pouring samples our batch of Lambic beer we brewed at the last show, then starting a whole new batch of wonderful Gastro-Brew.

And as always Clancey's Meat and Fish in Linden Hills will be providing our amazing dead meat door prize.

GASTRO NON GRATA TRAVELS TO THE LAND OF BEER AND CHEESE
Gastro Non Grata is proud to be a part of Furthermore Beer's "Sh**ty Barn Party". Saturday, September 26th. 6pm-2am in beautiful Spring Green, WI. Forget the House on the Rock, catch a glance of the Frank Lloyd Wright House and head on down to Furthermore Beer's Shitty Barn instead. All it takes is a $10 donation.

Ten Bucks'll get you some tasty Furthermore beer, including the release of the their Fallen Apple brew, a blend of beer and cider. Delicious.

The Underground Food Collective from Madison will have a dead pig being rotated over fire and Chef Nate Berg from Chippewa Falls, WI to collaborate on how to serve animal parts.

Local good time rockers Private Dancer are kicking off their tour and promoting their new 7 inch and Post Rock Wonders The Chambermaids will be ending their midwestern tour promoting their new album. Madison will be representing with the stony, gnarly riffs of Droids Attack as well.

Craig Grabhorn and Nina Bednarski from the Art Department are installing their art in the Sh**ty Barn and will also be doing some on site T-shirt screen printing for the thirsty crowd.

And.... Wait for it.... An honest to goodness Meat Raffle! It lives on across the border. Thanks to Cates Family Farm pasture-raised beef. Donating a box of summer sausage, skirt steak, ground beef, and maybe for fun a heart, tongue and liver.

It may be six hours away, but it's going to be a good time. Don't park in the neighbor's parking lot. Pitch a tent, roll out a sleeping bag in the barn. Get a hotel or appoint a sober buddy, but don't drive drunk. We'll have Bloodies and Breakfast the next morning for anyone who stays the night and will thoroughly appreciate anyone who helps clean up.

This is an indoor/outdoor event in late september, in a very crappy, drafty barn. Plan accordingly.

We welcome Sea Change Head Chef Erik Anderson and La Belle Vie chef de cuisine Mike Decamp into the fold to pair their piscatorial and vegetal culinary powers with the foamy eccentricities brought forth by Tony Magee, owner of Lagunitas Brewing Co.

Our Musical guests will begin with the whimsy of the Twin Cities Ukelele Orchestra, The yodelrific Rope Trick will bring good times and heartache, followed by double duty Tony Magee, brewery owner by day, dirty acoustic blues player by night. After the blues get you down, Double Bird will flip you off and get your head nodding, then the Dynamiters will fill your prescription for dirty snotty riffy garage mayhem.

Before you leave, Raul Saud and Victor Cruzalta of Helados Y Paletas La Chiquita in St. Paul will quench your parch with a tasty frozen treat and Northern Brewer will be on hand with the Rye Kolsch we started at our last show and concocting a new batch of gastrobrew for later use. IN RECENT GASTROHISTORY

Gastro Non Grata did it, we've found a friend in HeavyTable.com and we thinks you should visit them daily. They've taken some very pretty pictures of our last show which will soon be shared with you.

But first, I would like to take a minute to thank all the people that came to our last show. I would especially like to thank the Vietnamese pork salad, and Heather Hartman of Spoonriver, the salad's creator.

Secondly, I'd like to thank Rush River Small Axe for pairing, well frankly, almost too well with the salad. Your citrus finish and crisp, clean flavor really bowled me over. Nick Anderson, Rush River Brewmaster MC Hop Dog was kind enough to drive all the way to River Falls to brew it for you, get on that stage break down how they do it directly across the border. Here's a pretty picture of the Rush River Bubblejack IPA.

One thing I know is the boys from Northern Brewer were making the place smell like something good was happening while they brewed up a batch of rye kolsch during the last show. That'll make for a pretty darn good summer brew on August 23rd when we'll all be drinking it. Thank You, Northern Brewer.

We're gonna roast some pigs, make some bratwurst with Mike Philips

all day during the art-a-whirl celebration on May 17th in the Modern

Thanks to everyone who came to our last venture with Jim Grell of Modern Cafe and his pot roast, Sheela from Miel y Leche Catering and her cupcakes, she will cater the shit out of your event so I'm told, Duvel USA representing belgian beer love and all the amazingly wonderful bands that came to make the house shake.

That said, the show must go on and it will be going on Sunday, May 24th at the Triple Rock Social Club, doors at 6, show at 7. There will be some changes, first the bad news. We will be charging a slight cover at the door which we will keep as minimal as possible but to offset that, Northern Brewer is going to be on hand to brew a batch of beer to be drunk at the following Gastro Non Grata. I think they may even be adding a starter brew kit to whatever give away we end up doing that will hopefully be legal and whatnot.

So far our commitments are thus, Dreamland Faces is going to bring their amazing talent to the stage to turn the crowd on its ear and I'm pretty sure Modern Radio's His Mischief will be our headlining act. Heather Joy Hartman of Spoonriver and Cafe Brenda has signed on to be our food guest, so we may actually have a vegetarian option instead of huge slabs of meat. There's a first time for everything I guess. Does this mean we're going green the old fashioned way?

Six Parts Barbeque to One Part Herdez Salsa - Chile de Arbol, add two packages of lil' smokies and crock pot that baby for five or six hours.

Hello Dolly, all that BBQ flavor with the perfect heat kick from the salsa.

I don't even remember if I drank champagne because I couldn't stop eating these little wieners, after six hours the sauce had reduced down to a thick sticky form of awesome.

Write it down folks, These are really good cupcakes and you shouldn't

a dozen or two for your next holiday shindig or bob for them in
eggnog or when you just need a sugar high to get you through the day.

Jim Grell is our man! Jim has agreed to be our next chef guest on Feb. 15th. I talked to him the other day and he has no idea what he can do to top making sausage in front of our very eyes. I suggested something with lasers and bacon, because I'm always thinking about bacon.

I ate some hungarian bacon from bar 5 last night, it was amazing. And there are so many things you can wrap in bacon, and not many you can't.

Back to Jim, I stopped by and got the pot roast before our meeting and I have to tell you, simply presented but lots of great flavors running around in it. All the veg was perfect and meat you can eat with a spoon.

I need to set up another meeting.

So this is the next loss leader from the venerable, somnabulistic and a few other words I don't know the meaning of KING MINI. This is a 2 x 2 piece of oak and I've got 8 of them. They're going to be $35, but if you actually read this blog and can prove it, I'll knock ten bucks off because I'm a nice guy. So, please. Be a dear. Come on by the triple rock this sunday from 6-9pm for some free food, beer and music.

So here they are, If you want to print them out and throw them in the street, we'd appreciate it. Now all we can do is sit around, drink and wait for that fateful Sunday in November to eat, drink and listen for free. Just make sure to bring a few bucks for the meat raffle.

Local Chef Mike Philips from The Craftsman on Lake St. MPLS will be cooking two sample courses, one of which will have a beer pairing from Chris Staples of Furthermore Brewing who will be talking about and pouring two beers.

Can You Believe It?

This is going to be a good time, Chuck Kanski of Solo Vino will be pouring and expounding the virtues of Rose from all grape varietals and countries while Sam Newman of Bulldog NE prepares an Italian style meatloaf from his menu and also the Pizza Nachos he makes himself when he's bleary-eyed drunk on Friday nights at 3 a.m.

If that's not enough for you, there's also a pretty good rock show throughout, Amen and the Hell Yeahs will probably be drunk, the Yoleus will be instrumentally mind blowing and Gay Witch Abortion will make do what they always do and bring it.

Oh Yeah, there's also going to be a meat raffle throughout the show and "sass" mics set up in the audience. We'll see you there
